Diaper Bag Dish

One of my besties texted me yesterday asking what kind of diaper bag I had.. I had to share the following...

Bags are my absolute fave..purses, satchels, pocketbooks, clutches, beach bags heck I even love a cute gym bag. I would take a new bag over a new pair of shoes any day- even though they are a close second. When I found out I was preggo naturally the first thing I did was start the search for a diaper bag - it pretty much becomes your purse / day bag / lunch bag / black hole / bottomless pit.

I settled on this Petunia Pickle number and thought perfect, I can use it as a backpack if need be and have both hands free.

Fast forward to January 2012. My first trip to the pediatricians office with my four day old peanut. Sidebar- no one warned me that despite the temperature outside , your child's doctors office thermostat will be set somewhere between 110 and 120 degrees. I'm in a sweater, jeans and uggs with crazy postpartum hormones, a sore hoo hoo and leaky boobies drenched in sweat as I carry the car seat to the front desk to check out. I hand them my paper work and begin to reach for my wallet... Here's where the fun really began. I had to put down the baby( in the office amongst sick children - enough anxiety to cause my head to pop off) open the top Velcro flap which is coincidentally the same material used in space shuttles due to its strength, search through the fifteen outfits 12 diapers, two packs of wipes, pacis and blankets (as only a new mom on a first outing with her newborn would think to pack.. I remember thinking Absolutely I need all of this ) with sweat pouring down my back to find my wallet only to have to repack everything I threw on the floor and reattach the NASA approved Velcro flap. I left totally defeated but clearly a few pound lighter after shedding all that water weight.

I thought I cant do this, this is insane, that much chaos just to get something out of my bag...Enter my homegirl Kate..

I ordered this lovely lady and handled her next appointment like a champ, not to mention target trips/ mall trips and general running around town the stroller straps are pretty money as well. Having a bag which i can open with a shift of my hip, grab my wallet, swipe my target card ( which is so incredibly deadly p.s.) and grab my keys all while holding the car seat and peanut in the crook of my left arm has proved invaluable.

Hubs tried to get me to sell poor Petunia but something told me to hang on to her. As of late we have had many adventures downtown, being a stay at home mom with access to the Metro and all that Smithsonian has to offer is awesome. Having Petunia ( used as a backpack) is perfect for the Metro and museum visits so I am seriously glad I kept the old gal around.

All in all being such a bag hoarder I am sure I could justify buying several more, one for evening, one for weekends ...etc. But for now (until Hubs says sure get another) these two work really well for me.

Both adorable bags! I found a tote style with shoulder straps to be the best option as well.

I'm proud you thought to pack all the for the first doctor's visit. I was such a mess and went the opposite and underpacked. I forgot to bring diapers (because our ped's office is literally around the corner) and of course we needed a diaper as soon as we got there, 12 seconds after leaving the house with a dry diaper. The nurse made me feel like a crappy mom, which my hormonal self did not need. Sigh... Makes me remember how tough those early days were!
